I cannot for the life of me remember where it is this was found but all I can say is FUCKING BRILLIANT:

Bottom line: the only reason we humans capture, manipulate, harm, commoditize, and destroy animals (and plants, and all non-human life forms for that matter) is because people can. Because people have the power to do so without fear of consequences. Because our laws do not protect animals or plants or trees. Because our laws prohibiting animal cruelty are astonishingly weak. Because the punishments for animal cruelty are horribly lenient. Because a deer can’t pick up a rifle and shoot back at the hunter. Because a tree can’t grab the chainsaw away from the lumberjack and cut his arm off. Bottom line: people dominate other living things because there are no consequences in doing so.

Every other answer is merely a hollow justification. I’ve heard them all. “People are superior.” (We aren’t) “God made man dominant over all other living things.” (He didn’t — if even a God exists) “People control animals to control their population.” (No, we control them primarily for our benefit — controlling their population is an ancillary concern) “Animals and plants don’t have feelings.” (Irrelevant — a creature’s right to live free from human intervention isn’t predicated on whether it has feelings) The list of absurd justifications goes on and on. None are satisfactory.

Undoubtedly, humans owe much of their physical and intellectual evolution to controlling, dominating, and ultimately consuming other life forms. Evolution as a function of survival of the fittest — which I accept as a maxim.

However, inferential to Darwin’s theory of evolution is the notion of ethical evolution as well. That a species would one day evolve to such a point that it would create a system of laws to govern itself. That such a species would transcend “survival of the fittest” by internalizing its role as a good global citizen. That for humans, being a good global citizen means devoting our time, energy, capital, technology, and other resources to limiting human interference on other living creatures, and the resources upon which they depend.

Human beings are at such a stage in our evolutionary development. Ethics are a huge part of our social structure. We do govern ourselves. We do have a sense of right and wrong. But where we fall short is that we limit our ethics to that which is convenient to us.

Convenient ethics is not enough. Right and wrong do not recognize what is the path of least resistance. Capturing, dominating, manipulating, harming, displacing, destroying other living creatures — and the resources upon which they depend — is wrong. Period. Always has been, and always will be. But unlike humans of the past, modern-day man possesses the ethical self-awareness and the technological capability to change — to be that good global citizen. That should be our collective imperative.

I’m sure someone here will comment, “Maybe you should live in a cave.” or offer up some other absurd remark. Many will not understand or appreciate what I’ve written above. Many will react defensively, as they often do, when confronted by vegans, animal rights advocates, plant and tree advocates, etc. Many among them react dismissively, calling us “tree huggers” or “PETA-files” etc.

But regardless of what the naysayers offer, they know right from wrong. In their hearts, they know its wrong to capture, harm, manipulate, destroy, or otherwise interfere with other living things. And they know that the right thing to do would be to demand our legislators to invest in technologies aimed at mitigating human interference. That goal won’t happen today, but if we demand to start on that road, and see it through, then one day, humans will be able to call themselves good global citizens.

Eat Yer Veggies,
Vegun

PS: if you see this and you wrote it or know who wrote it have them comment back so we can get some dialogue going. I really love this post.

Yes it has been a while and yes I apologize. I have been too busy to actually post and work on the blog a whole lot. However I was talking with a friend of mine and they are really interested in helping out with the blog. As you know this blog is mainly a food blog just because I am interested in sharing recipes but we do also deal with politics and this was a perfect posting my friend recently sent me:

Donald Watson in his later years (proving once again you can be vegan for life, lived 95 years 61 years as a vegan and previous too that 20 years as a vegetarian)

I am very concerned about what I see happening to the definition of veganism. It has become a largely recognized word, but the definition has been so bastardized by the media, internet dictionaries, wanna-bes, and worst of all, people within the AR movement, that I no longer take any pride in calling myself “vegan” and am abandoning that word in favor of “I do not use animals”.

We need words to communicate, but if we do not agree on the definition of a word we are not communicating. The popular use of the word has become limited to dietary issues, and often the focus is on the benefits to humans. We already had a word for that, “strict vegetarian”, but since “vegan” sounds so much cooler and “we don’t want to be an exclusive club”, as Nathan Runkle actually said to me, the word has started to retrogress.

When Donald Watson formed the Vegan Society in 1944 he did indeed concentrate on diet, but I think the reason that he did that was because it was such a huge issue he was battling at the time. I think that he saw his greatest hurdle as the dietitians and popular attitude that we could not survive without animal proteins. He did not have the benefit of the research that he started, and groups like PCRM (pcrm.org) continue to prove. He was concentrating so much on breaking through that mentality that it would seem, at first, that he really was limiting the definition to dietary aspects, but if you read his very first newsletter you will see that it was not the limit of his concern. http://www.vegansociety.com/uploadedFiles/About_The_Society/Publications/The_Vegan_magazine/Feature_Articles/1944-news.pdf

He stresses the compassion aspect, condemns exploitation and compares animal exploitation with the enslavement of humans, and he makes a snide remark about vivisection. He was a pioneer, laying the groundwork on which to BUILD. He clearly expects us to build on what he starts when he talks about laying the foundation for our movement, and he says that the impediment to our moral development is our parasitic treatment of other animals, but you can tell that he is still struggling with his own ingrained speciesist attitudes and previously accepted science when he refers to other animals as “lower”. We all have to unlearn speciesism, and he was starting from scratch.

On the Vegan Society page that discusses the origin of “vegan” they state: “vegan lifestyles (I really do not like the word “lifestyles”, though)- that is, ways of living that seek to exclude, as far as is possible and practical, all forms of exploitation of animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.” http://www.vegansociety.com/about/history.aspx

“Any other purpose” is key. Our moral development depends on our building on what Donald Watson started. One of my favorite excerpts from his newsletter is, “There is an obvious danger to leaving the fulfillment of our ideals to posterity, for posterity may not have our ideals. Evolution can be retrogressive as well as progressive, indeed there seems always to be a strong gravitation the wrong way unless existing standards are guarded and new visions honoured. For this reason we have formed our Group, the first of its kind, we believe, in this or any other country.” He created the Vegan Society with the expectation that it would be progressive, and that we would build on what he started.

Now, the “cool club” kids are taking veganism in a retrogressive direction, downgrading it to a dietary issue and focusing on the benefits to humans, and well-known leaders of “the movement” are aiding this retrogression.

People (maybe even, to a small extent, the 1944 Donald Watson) have a very hard time grasping the concept that humans can live without using other animals. When someone limits the definition to dietary aspects, or makes it confusing with too many or too few “whys” and “hows” we lose the opportunity to teach people that other animals have moral rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness free from human exploitation.

People are used to the concept of dietary changes for one’s health, and it is still important to educate people about the health benefits (because they really want to believe the lies of the animal exploiting industries) of a vegan diet, but they really need to know that veganism is not about diet.

Veganism is about moral growth and a just society. It is about compassion and mercy. It is something to build on and live by, not to hinder and bend to one’s current lifestyle. It is a way of living that seeks to exclude all forms of animal exploitation for food, clothing, entertainment, experimentation, pet-trade, transportation, or any other purpose. That was the original society’s point; not diet.

Well, that was the idea anyway.

Eat Yer Veggies and happy new year,

Vegun and Qt

the more you toot, the more you toot the better you feel so lets eat beans for every meal.

Seriously these were some really good bean burgers and quite healthy. Plus they take money away from the mega corps and their crappy expensive veggie burgers and don’t support the meat industry or dairy industry. Plus they are easy to make and you can probably make them even cheaper if you make your own beans however canned beans are way easier.

Spicy Bean Burgers

Ingredients:

2 15 oz cans beans drained well (I would go with red and black because I am an anarchist, though seriously you could probably use any we just used red and black)

2 cups of cooked brown rice (you can use white rice but brown rice is better for ya)

1/2 onion, diced

1 tsp hot sauce (the chain burrito place always has extras if you don’t have any)

1 small bell pepper, diced (optional)

2 tbsp seasoning blend (paprika, garlic, pepper)

Salt too taste

Flour (I used All Purpose but Vital Wheat Gluten probably would also work)

oil for frying

Directions:

1.Mash the beans in a large bowl and add remaining ingredients

2.mix until well combined. Adding flour as needed to help firm up the mix and absorb liquid

3. Press firmly to form into patties

4. lightly fry in oil

A photo of said dish is soon too come a friend took a picture of them and she will hopefully send it my way soon!

Also the Deep Purple is going to be posted soon I have been busy and I don’t have the recipe handy yet as I wrote it up somewhere else!

A lot of people call it crack anywho this stuff blows that “cock” out of the water. It has better flavor and less ingredients (and nothing artificial) than that Huy Fong stuff. It does have drawbacks, it is not as spicy (a little more sweet but super flavorful) and you do have to refrigerate it (the huy fong cock crap doesn’t need refrigeration because it has artificial “shelf stabilizers”) The last drawback it is way too good and addictive but then again that is not a drawback. Pretty much I have gone through half of a huge bottle in about a weeks time.

What I like to do is mix it with a little soy sauce and then pour it on tofu (good high quality tofu) then eat (no extra cooking) it is delicious perfect on a salad or whatever.

What I recently did is stepped it up a notch (sort of a recipe but not really):

Take a block of firm tofu cut it into thinner blocks and dry with paper towels for a little bit. Then make a batter with flour and the afformentioned Crackinated Chili Sauce and some water (I might have added some more stuff but I don’t think so) dip the tofu in the batter and add too a preheated pan on medium high heat with a decent amount of oil (more oil at the proper temp. means less oil in the food, trust me) Fry till crispy and a bit browner (the batter is orangy so get it a bit darker without burning) Let it drain then take two slices of bread or a roll sliced in half and smear it with your favorite cheese sauce (made a bit thicker…I think I just had “Nootch” a little soy milk and water with some spices nothing fancy) then add some spinach (I would lightly saute it or cook it in the microwave for like 30 seconds (With a little shark for flavor) just to wilt it a bit) then add the tofu (and anything else you might like I would go with roasted peppers or mushrooms or sauteed onions) and the top slice of smothered bread. Then melt some vegan butter in a pan on medium heat and add sandwich and flip when browned on one side then take out when browned on the other side.

It was a really awesome sandwich and if you need help with amounts feel free to comment and I will do my best to answer them. Sorry I don’t have a recipe.

——–

Onto the rant

Also Joe Biden= extreme asshole who doesn’t know shit about what he is doing. So I have never been a Biden buddy but his most recent little scam cemented that. He decided too be charitable and so he went to a homeless shelter…sounds ok so far. He served some form of el cheapo Fish Sticks (fish is meat and meat is murder) too homeless people who were pissed off he was there. Why were they pissed off: Because along with Joe Biden was COPS, and if you have ever talked with homeless folks especially in D.C. or are one you would know that cops hate the homeless (for the most part) and the homeless get harassed by cops all the time (there was an incident a few years back when cops shot and killed a homeless mans dog for no reason and nothing ever happened to those cops) plus COPS were involved with the evictions and harassment at Franklin Shelter (the only one left in downtown that is no longer open but the building is vacant and could still be housing homeless folks) He also brought with him his media circus and other goons too glorify his less than charitable act.

From an article I read it sounded like Joe Biden was just an asshole trying to promote a better image of himself amidst a failing presidency that hasn’t met one of it’s promises yet! Biden would have been better off staying in the White House or his mansion at the Naval Observatory or one of his other large homes. He didn’t help the homeless he essentially barged into their temporary home with cops and media too make a lot of these people even more edgy and scared and freaked out too try and cover his ass for things like the war and lack of healthcare and failing economy.

So Joe go FUCK YOURSELF and stay the fuck in your white house and away from the homeless unless you actually want to help them then get them free housing (good housing that is greener and comfortable), get them any help they ask for or need, help them find jobs if they want jobs and keep cops off the streets. Also if you want to help them get the fuck out of their lives.

Rant over.

So obviously my last post was not pretty but here is something that is a bit more pretty or should I say pretty delicious!

BPC 4 life Shake that Smoothie

Bananas (put about 3 in the freezer if you can so they get really cold)

Peanut Butter (about a 3/4 of a cup will do ya I usually use smooth try to use natural stuff)

Chocolate (chips work fine as do smashed chocolate bars I would say at least 1/2 cup)

(see what I am talking about with the BPC)

Soy Milk (you can also use rice or hazelnut or whatever you like milk…I like plain I hate Silk (owned by Dean Foods which is the largest dairy producers in America and possibly the world and they take over smaller farmers as well as exploiting and killing animals))

Agave Nectar (I sometimes add some just if it needs an extra hint of sweetness I like the dark stuff but whatever works for you)

Ice (just too chill it down)

Take all your ingredients and add too a blender and blend till smooth and not too thick (add more soy milk if it is too thick) It is simple and easy and filling and I tend to fill a blender cup full so I have extra for breakfast or dessert or lunch. It is not an exact recipe it is just a delicious one you can edit too your likings. I hate Elvis so just putting it out there this has no relation to Elvis nor was thought up because of Elvis. According to an old doctor of mine chocolate is a vegetable so this is pretty much a health drink with fruits and vegetables and legumes hahahahahaha. Seriously though don’t eat this too often unless you are trying to gain a few pounds because it probably is a bit fattening but I don’t really care about that because this is a perfect pick me up and filler and will probably help clear up minor funks of depression (or at least give you some happiness)

Eat your veggies

Vegun

WARNING THIS CONTAINS THINGS YOU DON’T WANNA HEAR BUT FUCKIT IMMA SAY THEM ANYWAY.

So as many may have already read on the internets some guy shot up Ft. Hood killed some people. I have some commentary on the situation:

Major Malik Nadal Hasan (the shooter) was about too be deployed overseas for some stupid war for some stupid presidents, generals and corporations who couldn’t give one shit about the troops. From what it looked like he like many soldiers were extremely troubled by this and wanted out. According to news articles, in the past he had spoken out against the war and he was hoping like many people that Jesus aka Barack Obama was going to pull the troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Now I am not saying his shooting was right because it wasn’t he should have gone after the generals and the war mongers not the regular soldier. But more too the point it was up too the generals and war mongers to end the war and the killings. Instead they go on…

Obama called the shooting and I quote “a horrific outburst of violence” . Now you have too wonder is the war against Iraq and Afghanistan not a horrific outburst of violence and even worse it is for profit or does the fact it is for profit and power make it OK? When the military is slaughtering civilians in the middle east trumpets are heard but when someone is going after the military it is time to attack their actions while you are doing the same thing just magnified and killing way more civilians. Plus when you add on all the other horrific outbursts of violence the U.S. Government commits on a daily basis right here in America it is really fucking sad that this is the big news story and not people being thrown out of their homes or being thrown into prison or like Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah getting shot by the FBI (and they also brought a dog and as one commentator said “it was like Abu Grahib”) for being Muslim. We could also mention the past like Oscar Grant or Cornelius Maurice Warren or Sean Bell or Ronald Hughes or Deonte Rawlings (too name a few, all of them happen to be people of color) all unarmed all shot by POLICE in the US. Deonte who was 14 was shot by two off duty cops who thought the kid had stolen a toy minibike. The actual stolen minibike was found 16 miles away with no fingerprints of Deonte on it and no gun was found on Deonte nor any traces of him having a gun like Officers James Haskel and Anthony Clay claimed he had when they shot him in the back. They were some how found not guilty even with the overwhelming evidence showing they killed an innocent kid , just like all the other shootings the cops do.

You would think Mr. Hope and Change would hopefully change something but NO, cops are still murders the wars are still going on the corporations are still getting bailed out and the news is not about how many innocent people that the U.S. government has killed but about one soldier, who was worried and pissed off about the war that Obama said he would end, who finally flipped and killed 12 people and wounded 31 while the U.S. Military has killed between 92,489 and 1,003,000 (using the lowest estimate I saw too the highest) in Iraq and looking back too when the U.S. government dropped Atomic bombs on entire cities (Hiroshima and Nagasaki which had lasting effects) about 200,000 had died. Now again I am not supporting the shooting at Ft. Hood and I want to make that extremely clear but when you compare it too what the government has done and is doing it doesn’t even pale in comparison.

So in essence I am not happy that people died (it sucks big time) but the wars and violence the government commits on a daily basis is millions of times worse and yet nobody really gives a shit. I give a shit and I hope you will too. Now obviously I cannot give you ways in which too stop the war or put a hamper on it because they would not be wholly legal. However you are smart enough (hopefully) to go out and explore your possibilities.

If you are looking for a decent above ground more legal demonstration, the Port Militarization Resistance are the way too go because the right wing hates ‘em and some people in the anti war bowel movement also hate them meaning they cannot be all bad when the right wingers and liberal whinos hate your actions

http://olypmr.org/

One last point if you see a soldier who wants help befriend them (don’t patronize them or be a jackass) and help them out. You can give them this site and number (877) 447-4487 (GI rights hotline) Or in any case if you see someone who wants or needs help try and help them don’t just ignore them till they go off and kill people. It’s the same shit from Cho Seung Hu at VA Tech everyone ignored him till he shot some people then they all said “oh I never talked to him he had problems” and then condemned his actions when they refused to see why he did what he did and refused to help him out or at least try and befriend him.

Eat yer veggies and smash the state,

Vegun

slurry (about 3 tablespoons of water and 1 1/2 tablespoon of cornstarch or you can also use arrowroot)

1/2 tsp five spice

1/2+ tsp red pepper flakes (or if you have those nice little dried chilies found in asian cuisine a lot that would be better “chile de arbol” en español)

3 whole garlic cloves

1 slice of ginger

Optional:

Orange peel (if you are using fresh squeezed juice or have an extra orange in your pantry)

First start off with reducing the half cup of Orange Juice on medium heat in a small saucepan. Next add all the other ingredients but one tbsp of hoisin and your slurry (you want to mix both of those together) and cook for about 4 minutes and add the hoisin slurry and cook until slightly thicker about another 3 minutes and then you can let it sit on low and meld together for another 3 minutes. Strain and serve over vegetables or rice or noodles or tofu or a combination of those ingredients or whatever else you might cook up! T

his would be a perfect sauce for some nicely fried chunks of seitan with some stir fried peppers/onions and maybe some cashews. Sort of orange chick’n with cashews.

Fun orange facts:

Orange peel can be used as a slug repellent in yer garden

Orange leaves can be boiled to make tea.

The word orange is derived from sanskrit nāraṅgaḥ “orange tree.“

Blood Oranges are not made from blood.

l like apples (orange you glad I didn’t say bananas)

The classic phrase from the Confederates and KKK scum and right wingnuts is Heritage not Hate, yet of course if you know a little about history you will note the civil war was about slavery (though some will try and claim it was just rebellion and shit) and there was nothing anti racist about slavery. It was pure and simple exploitation. Exploitation of all living creatures needs to end.

I in the spirit of John Brown and his raid (which happened october 17th 1859) and in the spirit of ending exploitation and feeding people I bring you my classic:

TVP Sawsage Gravy

1 small onion diced

2 cloves of garlic chopped

2 + 2 tablespoons of vegan butter substitute (or you can use oil if need be)

spices (I generally use red pepper flake, basil, smoked paprika and a little nutmeg)

2 cups of TVP (dry)

1 1/2 cups broth (I would either use a mushroom broth or generally since I have it vegan not beef bullion cube with water)

1 teaspoon of soy sauce (use the real stuff not sodium benzoate hydrolyzed soy and caramel color)

1 teaspoon of Liquid Smoke

2 tablespoons of AP flour (you can also use whole wheat)

1/4 cup of nutritional yeast

1 cup of plain vegan milk (I used unsweetened cashew/almond cream mixed with a little water last time I made it but usually just plain soymilk)

Optionals:

Baby Spinach (added in towards the end maybe with 2 minutes left)

Hot Sauce (added in whenever usually at the end)

Secret optional ingredient (diced and added in with the onions)

Take a large pan on medium heat melt 2 tablespoons of the butter add the onions, garlic and spices and saute until nice and soft (about five minutes or so). Then add the TVP and stir for no more than 30 seconds then add the broth, soy sauce and Liquid Smoke, cook for about a minute or so. Add the rest of the butter let it melt briefly and add the flour and nutritional yeast and stir for 30 seconds or so than add your vegan milk cook for another 5 minutes while things tighten up and thicken a bit and then enjoy over some toasty bread or in a bowl with a big ole’ spoon.

This is a nice hearty breakfast useful when you need to be out all day hunting KKK losers or raiding Confederate Arsenals.

Eat yer veggies,

Vegun

Though he did promote the eating of spinach so he ain’t all bad, however he might have had a can handy this stuff is way bettter and probably better for you

Spiznich

1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil

3+ cloves of garlic (I sliced them part of the way through but left them whole)

Red Pepper Flake (make it spicy or not but seriously spicy is better)

1 teaspoon of Basil

a few big handfuls of baby spinach (it is ok if it is piled high it will cook down)

1/3 cup of Soy Milk

2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast

salt and pepper (to taste)

Take a medium pan on medium heat and saute the garlic, red pepper flakes and basil for about 5 minutes (do not let the garlic brown). Then add the rest of your ingredients and cover (with a good tight fitting lid) and saute and shake the pan (on and off you should also stir) for about 5-8 minutes or until the spinach has cooked through and become nice and soft and soaked up some of the milk and “noo-tch”. Serve this as a side dish or over rice or pasta (or other favorite grain)
